We were supposed to go to Carmel but dreading the long drive and particularly on a sunny day, decided to stay in and instead go for a stroll up Windy Hill. This turned out to be an excellent idea. I found a walking guide online which took us off the main path, down gulches, over streams, across mudslides and along ridges, through forest and scrubby gorsy bushes. We saw a hummingbird, the first I’ve ever seen, very exciting. At the top of Windy Hill it was bare and grassy, falling down to the wealth of Silicon Valley and San Francisco in the distance on one side and on the other beautiful lumpy hills and forests. On returning we took a wrong turn and found ourselves in what Tony Soprano indignantly termed a ‘retirement community’, a very high end one, a bit of a bummer after an exhilarating walk. We went to Palo Alto for lunch and then for coffee, a pleasant day.
